About

Synopsis

Clarinet Stories I premiered at Casa da Música Jorge Peixinho, in Montijo, in October 2025. The project sets out to explore and promote the creation of new music, in close collaboration between performer and composer, for one specific instrument: the clarinet.

These are collaborations that began years ago, out of which affinities grew — and with them, the desire to consolidate and expand the work together. Two works were written especially for Ruben Jacinto: The Egg, by Nuno d'Éça, and Lament for a Stranger, by Simone Spagnolo. Alongside them, two miniatures by Jaime Reis, a leading figure in Portuguese music, whose use of electronics is fascinating and meticulous.

Clarinet Stories II premieres in November 2026 at the Cinema-Teatro Joaquim d'Almeida, in Montijo (date and time to be announced), as the second part of the project. The programme includes Fluxus, true course – magnetic course, a new piece for clarinet and electronics by Jaime Reis, and Stranger for a Lament, the sequel to Lament for a Stranger by Simone Spagnolo. All the pieces are being recorded, culminating in an album whose official release is planned for early 2027.

Programme notes

I

The Egg

Nuno d'Éça · 2025 · clarinet and electronics

In Andy Weir's short story “The Egg”, a man who has died is confronted with his Creator. In a long conversation, he tries to make sense of his life, seeking inner peace with himself and with those he left behind. Inspired by this story, the piece — for clarinet, electronics and light — explores the acceptance of life's transience, in a “conversation” between an individual crossing over from another realm of existence (clarinet) and an unknown omnipotent entity (electronics).

II

Inverso Sangue: Âmbar

Jaime Reis · 2018 · solo clarinet

Sangue Inverso / Inverso Sangue is a long-form piece divided into parts, whose names are inspired by mineral elements. All of its structural elements, from the micro to the macro level, are based on ideas of symmetry.

III

Bartolomeu, o Voador

Jaime Reis · 2018 · clarinet and electronics

Dedicated to the memory of Bartolomeu de Gusmão and José Saramago, this is a didactic work for children's choir, narrator and electroacoustics, commissioned by A.P.E.M. / Cantar+ (Gulbenkian Foundation), Arte no Tempo and the Municipality of Seia. It was conceived to be performed in full — with theatrical elements, music and dance — or in fragments.

IV

Lament for a Stranger

Simone Spagnolo · 2025 · clarinet and actor

A piece for clarinet and actor inspired by the aesthetics of noir. It follows the psychological unravelling of Jonah, a jazz musician tormented by insomnia and by a haunted romantic fixation on a mysterious woman. It blends the sounds of jazz, the idiosyncrasies of contemporary music theatre and the nostalgia of noir storytelling. Commissioned by Ruben Lopes Jacinto, it was composed by Simone Spagnolo on an original text by Giordano Trischitta.
